Renowned scholar Thich Nhat Hanh speaks on Mindfulness
The Ahimsa Trust, the Doon School, and Vasant Valley School are organising a three-day retreat/ workshop titled 'Towards a Compassionate and Healthy Society', led by the renowned teacher, scholar and writer, Thich Nhat Hanh. The workshop will be held on 26-29 September 2008. Times Foundation is the strategic partner.

Thich Nhat Hanh ("Thay") will be in India from late September to the end of October 2008. Thich Nhat Hanh has been designated a ‘Distinguished Visitor’ by the Government of India and will be in the country for six weeks in connection with a variety of events.

"Mindfulness-based Education" is an exciting and important new development in kindergarten to class 12 th .
It develops skills such as:
• Attention and concentration
• Emotional and cognitive awareness and understanding
• Bodily awareness and coordination
• Interpersonal awareness and skills.

Mindfulness is increasingly recognized as an essential support for students, teachers, school administrators, and parents. Decades of research and practice have proved it to be a powerful tool, benefiting one’s health, optimizing academic ability, enhancing social and emotional relations, and most importantly, promoting a sense of wellbeing.
At the same time, the practice of mindfulness decreases stress, attention deficit issues, depression, anxiety, and hostility. It is a foundation for education, providing the optimal conditions for learning and teaching, supporting all pedagogical approaches.

The retreat/workshop will focus on introducing these practices to teachers so that they can use it in their own lives and, based on their experience, share it with their students. The workshop will include talks and questions and answers by Thich Nhat Hanh, discussions in groups, guided meditations, exercises in stress reduction, relaxation and mindful communication, and the practice of techniques to restore and maintain good communication. .

Simultaneous Hindi translation will be provided on request.
